ENG: Looking Back, Reaching Forward is the second album by the Finnish jazz musician and composer Visa Oscar (b. Visa-Pekka Oskari Mertanen, 1976). The album is the culmination of a ten-year artistic doctorate at the jazz department of Uniarts Sibelius Academy. It is the first release of the newly founded Sibis Jazz record label of the Sibelius Academy's jazz department and the Sibis Jazz Doc publication series.
On the album, you can hear influences from the styles of Chick Corea, Joe Zawinul, George Duke, Jan Hammer and Michael Brecker, through the mind of Visa Oscar.
Over the past ten years, Oscar has extensively studied the improvisation of the first-generation jazz synthesizer and has drawn influences from it for his own music. The result is a rich album that takes its inspiration from the past, combining it with contemporary sounds and moods. The top names of the Finnish jazz scene play in Visa Oscar's band: e.g. saxophonist Ville Vannemaa, bassist Antti Ahoniemi and drummer Jussi Lehtonen. In addition, the album features an impressive group of foreign and domestic top musicians: drummers Dave Weckl and Rafael Barata and bassists Carlitos Del Puerto and André Vasconcellos, as well as singer Eeppi Ursin, percussionist Ricardo Padilla and saxophonist Joonatan Rautio.
FIN: Looking Back, Reaching Forward on suomalaisen jazzmuusikko ja -säveltäjä Visa Oscarin (s. Visa-Pekka Oskari Mertanen, 1976) toinen albumi yhtyeenjohtajana. Levy on Oscarin Taideyliopiston Sibelius-Akatemian jazz-osastolla tehdyn kymmenen vuoden taiteellisen tohtorintutkinnon huipentuma. Samalla se on Sibelius-Akatemian jazzosaston vastaperustetun Sibis Jazz-levymerkin ja tohtoritutkijoiden Sibis Jazz Doc-julkaisusarjan ensimmäinen julkaisu.
Levyn kappaleissa kuullaan vaikutteita mm. Chick Corean, Joe Zawinulin, George Duken, Jan Hammerin ja Michael Breckerin tyyleistä, summaa Visa Oscar.
Oscar on viimeisen kymmenen vuoden aikana tutkinut laajasti yllämainittujen ensimmäisen sukupolven jazzsyntetisaattorimestarien improvisaatiota ja ammentanut siitä vaikutteita omaan musiikkiinsa. Tuloksena on rikas albumi, joka saa inspiraationsa menneisyydestä yhdistäen siihen nykyajan soundeja ja tunnelmia. Visa Oscarin yhtyeessä soittavat suomalaisen jazzkentän kärkinimet: mm. saksofonisti Ville Vannemaa, basisti Antti Ahoniemi ja rumpali Jussi Lehtonen. Lisäksi levyllä vierailee vaikuttava joukko ulkomaisia ja kotimaisia huippumuusikoita: rumpalit Dave Weckl ja Rafael Barata sekä basistit Carlitos Del Puerto ja André Vasconcellos sekä laulaja Eeppi Ursin, lyömäsoittaja Ricardo Padilla ja saksofonisti Joonatan Rautio.
