Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Requiem KV 626

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Requiem will be heard in the Mikkeli City Orchestra's Easter concert. The history of the work is shrouded in mystery: Just a few weeks before his death, Mozart was commissioned to compose the Mass, a sign for the already superstitious composer. Mozart died before the work was completed, and it was finished by his students. The masterpiece is composed for four singing soloists, choir and orchestra, consists of 12 parts. The dark-toned orchestra supports the choir with vivid motifs.

Finnish soloists will be heard as the soloists of Requiem: Sopraano Päivi Pylvänäinen rose to the attention of the general public with her praised title role in Ilkka Kuusisto's opera Aino Ackté. The program of the award-winning mezzo-soprano Essi Luttinen extends from early baroque music to the premieres of today's composers. Tenor Mika Nisula has also won awards in several Finnish singing competitions, and has been seen on opera stages in New York as well as in Finland. Baritone Heikki Kilpeläinen has had a long and extensive career in German opera houses. Requiem is conducted by Jonas Rannila, a young conductor who has gained a reputation as an opera conductor and choir director.

The Requiem Choir, whose singers consist of choirs from the Helsinki metropolitan area, and the Manifestum Male Choir, whose artistic director is Rannila, are responsible for the demanding choir parts of Requiem.
