"Dancing and Twirl-ing: Contemporary clarinet from the perspective of Libby Larsen and Markku Klami" is Lucy's first lecture recital as part of her doctoral artistic research project at the Sibelius Academy. It will be presented at the 3rd Annual Doctors in Performance festival conference of music performance and artistic research at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theater (LMTA) in Vilnius, September 4-6.
Abstract:
“Dancing and Twirl-ing” will present two contemporary solo clarinet works: Libby Larsen’s Dancing Solo (1994) and Markku Klami’s Twirl (2008). I will play two movements from the Larsen (around 6 minutes) and the entire Twirl (6 min 30 sec). The presentation will explain, through a comparison of compositional elements, how both pieces provide the performer with unique opportunities for artistic expression. I will also discuss, from a musicological and sociocultural perspective, differences and similarities in the composers’ backgrounds, methods, and artistic philosophies as case studies of differences in contemporary music practice in the United States and Finland.
